A remarkable group of photographers joined me on an extraordinary four-day journey to the “Kingdom of the Pelicans” at Lake Kerkini, during my annual Nature and Wildlife Photography Workshop!
As the dust settles and the memories from our recent photography workshop at the idyllic Lake Kerkini begin to crystallize, I feel compelled to share some thoughts and experiences from this unforgettable adventure.
The weather conditions were ideal for photography, presenting us with a range of scenarios from golden morning light to thick fog, and tranquil waters that were perfect for capturing reflections. The temperature was pleasant, typical for mid-January. Even though we experienced light rain for an hour on the second morning, the overall conditions remained perfect for photography.
James, Stylianos, and I fully engaged in photographing the splendor of the pelicans. We had the chance to take a wide range of shots, from close-ups to capturing them in flight amidst the foggy scenery. With my guidance, we succeeded in capturing the various aspects of the Dalmatian pelican, showcasing its dual nature as both the clown and the king.
Naturally, we also experienced moments of pure tranquility, savoring peaceful times with tea and coffee aboard our boat in the heart of the lake.
During our four days trip we ventured off-road to discover Lake Kerkini’s wilder parts and relaxed along the shores of the River Strimona. Our cameras didn’t miss a beat, snapping shots of robins, kingfishers, flamingos, egrets, buzzards, kestrels, grebes, cormorants and awe-inspiring landscapes.
During the intervals between our sessions, we dedicated time to discussing and critiquing our photos and videos. We shared thoughts on various photographic techniques and settings, and also engaged in conversations about the life and experiences of a photographer.
But more than anything, it was a journey filled with laughter and fun. We even played at being Vikings in the early morning fog, humorously “attacking” other boats in a playful quest for pelicans!
Our goal for the workshop was simple yet ambitious: to explore the magic of nature through our lenses, capture the beauty of the Dalmatian Pelicans, and awe with images of the unique landscape offered by Lake Kerkini. What I hadn’t anticipated was the depth of connection we would forge, not just with nature, but also amongst ourselves as a group.
Beyond the photo sessions, it was the moments of calm and discussion that lent a deeper meaning to the experience. In the lighter moments over coffee and tea on the boat, we exchanged stories, laughter, and advice. These conversations and shared experiences fostered a sense of community and camaraderie that added even more value to our journey.
James and Stylianos departed from Lake Kerkini with the majesty of this place and its animal inhabitants etched in their hearts and minds. It’s exciting that they produced strong images and had a wonderful experience.
