Celebrating World Wetlands Day with everyone through my new film from Lake Kerkini!
World Wetlands Day, observed annually on February 2nd, serves as a global call to recognize the vital importance of wetlands to both the environment and humanity. This day marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, aimed at conserving and using wetlands sustainably. Wetlands are not just scenic natural landscapes; they are also among the most productive ecosystems in the world, providing essential services such as water filtration, flood protection, and carbon storage. They are a habitat for a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which are endangered.
Lake Kerkini emerges as a shining example of the importance and value of wetlands on a global scale. Situated in Northern Greece, this artificial lake, created in the early 20th century, has evolved into a vital wetland ecosystem, underlining the potential for human-modified environments to support and enhance biodiversity. Lake Kerkini serves as a critical habitat for numerous bird species, including several that are rare or endangered, such as the Dalmatian pelican. This makes it a hotspot for birdwatching and nature photography, drawing attention to the beauty and ecological significance of wetlands.
