This January, my workshops at Lake Kerkini wrapped up with two incredible groups of photographers and nature enthusiasts, creating unforgettable memories filled with laughter, creativity, and stunning imagery.
Together, we captured breathtaking photos and videos of the majestic Dalmatian pelicans that reign over this picturesque lake.
Mark, Amber, Ed, Carol from U.S., Carol from U.K., and Katerina from Greece formed two amazing small groups, contributing to a positive and collaborative atmosphere. Their enthusiasm and camaraderie helped set the perfect stage for capturing Lake Kerkini’s most iconic residents.
The small size of our groups provided plenty of space on the boat and along the shoreline, enabling everyone to move comfortably, find the perfect shooting angles, and fully embrace each photographic opportunity. The small group dynamic is something I always emphasize, as it creates the perfect environment for collaboration and creativity—something you can read more about here.

Capturing the Majesty of Kerkini’s Pelicans
The highlight, of course, was photographing the Dalmatian pelicans, known for their striking appearance and regal presence. As an added bonus, we encountered a few Great White Pelicans – called “Rose Pelicans” in Greece – which added variety to our portfolio and enriched the experience with more unique shots.

The weather was perfect for photography, offering a diverse range of conditions that fueled our creativity. Although golden morning light was scarce, the dense fog and glassy calm waters created an enchanting scene, ideal for capturing breathtaking reflections. The crisp mid-January temperatures were easy to endure and added to the serene winter ambiance of the lake. Even a light drizzle during one evening session failed to dampen our enthusiasm; instead, it added a moody, atmospheric touch to our shots, enriching the overall experience.

Beyond Photography: Building Skills and Connections
In between photo sessions, we dedicated time to analyzing and critiquing our work, sharing techniques, and exchanging insights about the life of a photographer. These discussions provided valuable lessons and perspectives, enhancing our understanding of nature photography.
Yet, the workshops were about more than just photography. It was a journey of shared experiences, where bonds were forged over coffee breaks on the boat, early morning Viking-themed antics in the fog, and laughter-filled conversations. These lighter moments created a sense of community that went beyond the lens, adding a human touch to our shared love for nature and wildlife.
Reflecting on an Unforgettable Experience
Our goal was ambitious yet simple: to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Lake Kerkini and capture its King, the majestic Dalmatian pelican. What I hadn’t fully anticipated was the depth of connection we’d form—not just with nature, but also with each other.
Mark, Amber, Ed, Carol, Carol and Katerina left Kerkini with their hearts full and memory cards packed with powerful images that capture the magic of this place. It was inspiring to witness their growth and the passion they poured into their work. Hearing their feedback that they had the time of their lives and promised to return to Kerkini was all I could have hoped for.
