Recently, I had the chance to talk about Lake Kerkini, Dalmatian Pelicans and the pressing need for better conservation efforts on SKAI’s travel show Wherever There Is Greece.
It was a small but important moment to highlight the significance of this unique wetland and the threats it continues to face.
Why Lake Kerkini Matters
Lake Kerkini is one of the most important wetlands in Greece and one of the most important habitats for Dalmatian Pelicans in Europe.
These majestic birds rely on the lake for food and nesting, but despite its protected status, the ecosystem is under serious threat due to the accumulation of plastic waste and other debris, posing a significant danger to wildlife.
The Need for Stronger Conservation Efforts
During my appearance on Wherever There Is Greece, I emphasized that protecting Kerkini is not just about saving the pelicans—it’s about preserving an entire ecosystem that supports countless bird species and biodiversity.
Conservation efforts, such as daily cleanups, stricter regulations, regular inspections by authorities to monitor tourists and fishermen coming from other areas and littering, along with greater public awareness, are essential to preserving this vital habitat and safeguarding it for future generations.
I appreciate the opportunity to bring attention to this issue, and I hope more people will recognize the importance of protecting Kerkini and its wildlife. Let’s work together to safeguard this natural treasure!

2025 Lake Kerkini CleanUp Event
Last year, together with the Society of Professional Photographers and Videographers of Central Macedonia, we organized a cleanup event (#cleanuplakekerkini), focusing on a small section of the eastern side of Lake Kerkini. In just one day, we managed to collect over 100 large bags of waste, highlighting the urgent need for continuous efforts to protect this fragile ecosystem.
This year, we are repeating the event in September or October, and we need more people to join us in making a difference! If you’re interested in helping, fill out this form, and I will notify you via email with all the details.
Let’s work together to keep Kerkini clean and safe for wildlife!
