On my trip in Kenya I had the opportunity of witnessing the remarkable efforts of the Solio Rhino Orphanage. This sanctuary is devoted to protecting and rehabilitating one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered species—the rhino.
Situated within the stunning Solio Game Reserve, the orphanage is far more than a safe haven. It stands as a powerful symbol of wildlife resilience and the tireless commitment of conservationists working to secure the future of these magnificent creatures.

A Lifeline for Orphaned Rhinos
The Solio Rhino Orphanage offers crucial support to young rhinos that have lost their mothers, often due poaching or human-wildlife conflicts. These vulnerable animals receive round-the-clock care, including carefully crafted diets, medical attention, and the emotional nurturing needed to overcome their trauma.
As I explored the facility, I was moved by the deep bond between the caretakers and the rhinos. Each rhino is treated as an individual, with a name, a unique personality, and a team dedicated to its well-being. Observing these majestic animals, it was impossible not to be inspired by their strength and determination to thrive despite their challenges.
What impressed me the most were the facilities and the dedicated care provided to the rhinos.
In addition, the orphanage served as a sanctuary for other animals, including zebras, impalas, and elands.
Eventually, I had the opportunity to meet Njamba and Zawadi, two 2-year-old orphaned rhinos, as well as Moyo (Brave Heart), a rhino calf. Alongside them were Bahati, the zebra, and Carissa, the impala. I even had the unforgettable experience of feeding Njamba with a milk bottle.
Solio’s Leadership in Conservation
Located within one of Kenya’s most renowned reserves, Solio is a trailblazer in rhino conservation. Established in the 1970s as the country’s first private rhino sanctuary, it has played a pivotal role in preserving and increasing rhino populations. Today, it hosts one of the largest populations of black and white rhinos in Kenya, making it a cornerstone of global conservation efforts.
The orphanage complements the reserve’s work by providing a safe environment for young rhinos to grow and prepare for eventual reintegration into the wild. This intricate process takes years of planning and care but is essential for securing the species’ survival.
How You Can Help
Visiting the Solio Rhino Orphanage was a profoundly moving experience, highlighting the urgent need to protect rhinos from extinction. It’s a place where hope thrives, and every effort is made to ensure a brighter future for these extraordinary animals.
If you’re planning a trip to Kenya, I highly recommend adding the Solio Game Reserve and its orphanage to your itinerary. Witnessing the dedication of the team and the resilience of the rhinos is both inspiring and unforgettable.
